Oscar Winners Discussed Over Dinner

2020 brought the 92nd Academy Award of Merit, also known as the Oscars. This year, Oscar history was made. See who took home the well known Gold Statues. The Academy Awards had many twists and turns.

Best Picture:
Winner: Parasite

Who Should Have Won: Honestly, I think any of them should have won. All of them were fantastic films that I would have been happy that they won. My favorites were Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Marriage Story, 1917, and Parasite.

Lead Actor:
Winner: Joaquin Phoenix- Joker

Who Should Have Won: Joaquin Phoenix or Adam Driver. Both actors’ performances gave me chills while watching. They were just so spectacular.

Lead Actress: Winner: Renee Zellweger- Judy

Who Should Have Won: Scarlett Johansson. Scarlett’s performance of Nicole in Marriage Story in my opinion, was better than Renee’s and that says a lot. Renee gave a beautiful performance, but Scarlett stayed in my mind far longer than Renee.

Supporting Actor: Winner: Brad Pitt- Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Who Should Have Won: Tom Hanks. I mean, it’s Tom Hanks. If I could control the Oscars, Tom would win every award he is nominated for. Granted, Brad was outstanding as Cliff Booth.

Supporting Actress: Winner: Laura Dern- Marriage Story

Who Should Have Won: All of them. Kathy Bates has always been phenomenal. Scarlett Johannson was one of the many amazing parts of Jojo Rabbit. Florence Pugh and Margot Robbie stood out in their respected films.

Best Director: Winner: Bong Joon Ho- Parasite

Who Should Have Won: Bong Joon Ho or Sam Mendes. Bong Joon Ho’s film was gorgeous; while 1917 was filmed in a way I have yet to see in cinema history.

Best Adapted Screenplay: Winner: Taika Waititi

Who Should Have Won: Taika Waititi. He is one of my favorite directors and heroes. He deserved this award so much.

Best Original Screenplay: Winner: Bong Joon Ho & Jin Won-Han- Parasite

Who Should Have Won: Any of them. I enjoyed every single one of the movies, so I can’t complain about any of them winning.

Cinematography: Winner: Roger Deakins- 1917

Who Should Have Won: Roger Deakins. Like I said, this movie is filmed in an extraordinary way. It was truly one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen.

Best Foreign Language Film: Winner: Bong Joon Ho- Parasite

Who Should Have Won: Parasite. It was a fantastic film that I absolutely love.

Original Score: Winner: Hildur Guðnadóttir- Joker

Who Should Have Won: Hildur. Her score was the part of the movie that stuck with me more than any other part of the film.

Original Song: Winner: “I’m Gonna Love Me Again” Elton John & Bernie Tupin- Rocketman

Who Should Have Won: Elton John. This song was written for his biopic, and it talks about how after he fell, he found the strength to forgive himself for his mistakes and love himself for who he really is. Stand Up by Cynthia Erivo from her movie Harriet was my other favorite.

I’m Gonna Love Me Again
Stand Up

Visual Effects: Winner: 1917

Who Should Have Won: 1917 or Avengers: Endgame. They both had amazing visuals. I can’t choose between the two

All in all, Parasite seems to have won the night. This was the first time a non-english speaking film has ever won Best Picture. These were some of the best Oscars I have seen in a while, and I can’t wait to see what 2020 brings to film.
