Hypebeast Culture is Not for Vultures

Being a hypebeast is not cheap. Many single items classified as “hypebeast” can cost anywhere from hundreds to even thousands of dollars. A few students here at Greenway own hypebeast items and clothing.

Sophomore Ciera Ladd said that the brands she wears are GCDS, Champion, Gucci, Vetemênts, Kappa, and a few more.

She said that her favorite brand currently is GCDS because of the quality of the brand’s clothes, and the fact that it’s fashionable. When asked how much she has spent on one item, she said “I spent $300 on a Gucci ring.

I don’t know if it was worth it though because it fit too big.” She was also asked why it’s worth it to spend a large amount of money on hype beast brands and said ” For me, it’s the satisfaction of knowing I’m spending money on sustainable fashion rather than fast fashion (inexpensive clothing produced rapidly by mass-market retailers in response to the latest trends) because it wastes resources and rips off lesser artists whereas sustainable brands are creating unique pieces.”

She says that she models her outfits after supermodels like Gigi and Bella Hadid, and Dua Lipa. “I usually buy my stuff from secondhand retailers (depop) or straight from flagship stores or websites,” Ladd said. “Every hype beast has their own look. There’s that basic aesthetic that everyone associates with it, but really it kind of just feels like an appreciation of fashion. Fashion trends literally change by seasons, so what might be in this season might be out the next. It’s art.”

Junior Erni Perviz said that he typically wears brands like Off-White, Christian Louboutin, MCM, Supreme, and Balmain. His favorite out of these is Off-White because he likes how they design their clothes.

Perviz said that hype beast items can cost anywhere from $200-$6,000. “Fashion is a way to express yourself,” Perviz said. His outfits are mostly modeled from rappers or Youtubers, and he purchases his clothes either online, or at Scottsdale Fashion Square.

Another Sophomore, Chris Beltran says that he has many brands that he wears including Louis Vuitton, Gucci, CDG (Comme des Garçons), Burberry, Ralph Lauren, and Coach. His favorite out of these is Louis Vuitton because of the brand’s quality and look.

“I’ve spent up to $500 on items,” said Beltran. He said that it’s definitely worth it to buy hypebeast clothing and items because it’s a big part of fashion. “I typically shop online for my things,” Beltran said.

Junior Victor Sanchez says that the brands he wears are Yeezy, Off-White, Raf Simons, VLONE, Bape, Supreme, and Stussy. His favorite brand is Bape because it’s hype and fashionable.

He also says that items can be up to $1,300 to $2,500 (always very expensive). When asked if it’s worth it to spend a lot of money on clothes and items like this he said “It’s drip so why not spend money on it?” His purchases are typically on online stores like StockX. ” You got to have that over seas drip,” Sanchez said.
