HOME OF DE MEMES

Memes have been around for quite awhile. The definition of a meme is: an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture Memes (discrete units of knowledge, gossip, jokes and so on) are to culture what genes are to life. While the first meme was made in 1976, they gained enough traction to remain relevant even decades later. With the introduction of new technology and improvements being made on the internet in the past few years, people are posting more and more memes.

Senior Nick Piazza likes memes because they “bring him life.” He said some of his favorites are offensive memes because he finds it funny to “see how upset all the softies get over memes.” When asked why he thinks they’re popular, he responded, “Our generation has nothing better to do.” Nick’s favorite meme is “here come dat boi.”  According to Nick, the dumbest memes are “tide pods, and Kanye memes.”

Junior Arthur Decker said, “They’re really funny, and they’re really good ice breakers with the ladies.” His favorite memes are dad memes because “I am a ‘dad’”. Arthur thinks memes are popular because they’re a good form of entertainment and people can relate to them. The memes he said he disliked the most are moth memes.

Another junior,  Mohommad Ibrahim said,  “I just love them.” One meme he likes is the Arthur meme because he used to watch the show. His favorite memes though, are the 5 gum memes.

According to Zach Lee, a freshman, memes are interesting “because they’re a way of life.” His favorite meme is the bongo cat meme.

Memes have become increasingly popular over the past few years as a form of entertainment for the younger generations. Some think this is because we have shorter attention spans, others think it’s just because they’re easily accessible. Whatever the case, memes are becoming more and more popular in today’s world, and it might be helpful to stay aware of the current meme trends.
