Best Buddies is Not for Fuddie Duddies

BEST BUDDIES IS NOT FOR FUDDY DUDDIES

Best Buddies is the world’s largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical, and economic isolation of the 200 million people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This organization has been at Greenway for at least 10 years. Mr. Renard, the new sponsor, says that he loves it, and he loves seeing the “natural relationships between buddies and peers.” The co-sponsors of Best Buddies are Barb Carlson, Tim Jarrell and Kari Snow.

There are about 35 members, with half being a peer-to-buddy relationship. The main goal for this is for both the mainstream student and the student with disabilities to become closer with each other, which is currently happening and being encouraged. Recently, they did a park clean-up with the buddies and both the buddies and the members enjoyed the event.

The president of Best Buddies, Junior Hidar Abugala, said that from when he first started until now, it’s “different because instead of being your buddy’s friend, you’re friends with everyone.” He stated that he likes being a part of Best Buddies because of the influence and the friendships that you create with your buddy and other members. He also likes seeing his buddy’s face light up when they participate in activities; he also said he likes seeing his buddy happy, especially when he meets new people.

Another member of Best Buddies is sophomore Lilly Ramirez. She said, “The buddies are the best part” of being in the organization because you build great friendships. She also said she likes making a difference and making people smile during the events that they have.

One of the buddies from Best Buddies, freshmen Christien Scali, said “it’s fun” because he gets to hang out with his friends and play games with them and other people. With some of the events going on this year, he states that he likes helping out with them.

Another buddy from the club is sophomore Kevin Rodriguez; he likes it a lot because he’s “talking to friends” and he likes playing the games they do at some of their events or when they’re hanging out for fun with their own buddies and others.

Some events that the Best Buddies has planned for the future are a Best Buddies Prom in May, a Car Wash event, a Valentine’s Day event in February, Meet the Parents Night, The Friendship Walk, Spread the Word to End the Word Campaign, and senior recognition night.

It’s a great organization that students are encouraged to get involved with.  If you are interested in being a part of this impactful organization then contact Mr. Renard in room B106.
