11/21 – C. HAYDEN/INDY/ESTRELLA – AWAY

Demon Wrestling kicked off its 2017-2018 campaign by dominating the Patriots of Independence 54-16, crushing the Falcons of Carl Hayden 48-21, and corralling the Wolves of Estrella Foothills 42-26.The Varsity efforts were spearheaded by Seniors Brody Jones, Jonas Smith, Matt Simmons, and Diego Armenta who all went undefeated on the night and collecting 8 pins. Sophomores Paul “Birthday Boy” Marghitas and Colton Johnson also went unbeaten and each racked up their first career Varsity pins.Seniors Desmond Smiley and Marco Armenta and Sophomore Elias Torrecillas also showed up to wrestle earning their first pins of the young season. Great start to the season guys!

11/29 – AP.JCT./SETON/C.GRANDE – AWAY –

The Varsity wrestling squad took on Apache Junction and Casa Grande last night in their second night of competition this season. The Demons lost both duals in heartbreaking fashion, falling a single match short of victory in each contest despite only bringing wrestlers for 8 of the 14 weight classes. Highlights for the evening included Senior Nick Thomas in his first matches of the season pinning both of his opponents in convincing fashion, and Senior Jonas Smith continuing his unbeaten ways, collecting 2 pins, and racking up a 5-0 record so far this year. Seniors Brody Jones, Matthew Simmons, and Desmond Smiley as well as Junior Josiah Winans and Sophomore Colton Johnson also collected wins on the evening for the Demons.

Great job, Demons!

12/6 – APOLLO/MULTI – AWAY –

12/13 – CORTEZ/COMBS – HOME

The Varsity wrestling squad was at it again last night, going 2-1 against Combs, Coronado, and Cortez. Despite not having a full line-up, Seniors Jonas Smith, Diego Armenta, Matthew Simmons, and Nick Thomas led the team to two solid victories. Sophomore Tanner Vanhorn saw the most matches of the night, but still went unbeaten, pinning all of his opponents, and Junior Jacob Morgan followed closely behind pinning two opponents in less than 30 seconds each.

 

1/3 – AM.LDRSH./FLOR./C.SHAD.- AWAY –

1/10 – MARCOS/CAMELBACK – HOME

The wrestlers finished off their last home dual meet of the season last night, taking on the Padres of Marcos de Niza. Senior Nick Thomas made his opponent yell “Tio!” (“uncle” in Spanish) last night as he led the way for the Varsity boys. Junior Josiah Winans also beat his opponent convincingly with a first period pin. The guys celebrated a strong season this far with a senior night that saw the Demon families come out in force. Jonas Smith, Matt Simmons, and Marco Armenta have led the team all season as the only wrestlers to have been on the team all four seasons. Great job Demons!

JUNIOR VARISTY WRESTLING SEASON RECORD (0-0)

11/20 – MULTI – HOME

The JV wrestling team shot into the season going 3-0 last night at home. The team defeated all three challengers Williams Field 18-12, Tempe 36-33 and Centennial 12-9. Outstanding wrestlers for the evening were Junior Jacob Morgan; Sophomores Paul Marghitas, Colton Johnson, Cody Cooper, and Elias Torrecillas, all of whom pinned their opponents. Great opening match guys! Go Demons!!!

Junior Varsity did great last night. The team scores are as follows: Greenway 42, Shadow Ridge 15, Greenway 48, Sierra Linda 12, Greenway 42, Cactus 12. Outstanding performances by Daniel Craig, Noah Brossman, Elliot Lombard, Enoch Dyer, Joseph Simmons, Christian Johnson and Evan Huskon made for an exciting night of victories!
12/7 – MOON VALLEY/ MULTI – AWAY –

The Greenway JV wrestlers pinned their way to victory at the Sunnyslope Tournament on Saturday. Hidar Abugalal and Elias Torreciallas took first place. Colton Johnson finished 2nd. with Ricardo Hernandez placing 3rd and Cody Cooper 5th..

12/14 – GLENDALE – AWAY –

The Greenway JV wrestlers pinned down Glendale, Independence, Sunnyslope, Washington and Ironwood last night. Leading the Demon JV wrestlers were Paul Marghitas with four pins, Elias Torrecellas and Ricardo Hernandez with three pins. Hidar Abugalal and Dominic Dileo pinned two opponents and one for Thomas Simmons.

1/10 – MARCOS/CAMELBACK – HOME

The JV wrestling squad took on Marcos de Niza last night and wrestled tough! Sophomore Colton Johnson dominated his opponent and Freshman Brandon Woodland stepped up as both these young Demons came out with pins last night. In the thriller of the evening, Sophomore Elias Torrecillas took his opponent to overtime and won a sudden victory with 5 seconds left in the overtime period. The crowd literally jumped to their feet at the exciting conclusion. The JV and frosh wrestlers are back at it this Saturday as they host their annual tournament to show the rest of the state who the toughest wrestlers truly are! Good luck Demons!

 

1/13 – JUNIOR VARSITY/ FRESHMEN TOURNAMENT – HOME –

Congratulations to the GW JV wrestling team who won 16 of their 20 matches, 13 with pins, this past weekend @ the GW JV & Freshman Tournament. Leading the Demon JV wrestlers were Colton Johnson, Paul Marghitas and Elias Torrecillas defeating their opponents with 3 pins each.  Dominic Dileo also won his 3 matches with 2 pins and a decision.

1/17 – PEORIA/GLENDALE – AWAY –

The GW JV Wrestling Team grappled their way to 2 more victories last night by shutting out  Glendale 15-0 and defeating Peoria 24-9 on the mat. Leading the way were Tanner Vanhorn and Thomas Simons with 2 pins each.  Also contributing to the Demons victories were Elias Torrecillas, Dominic Dileo and Heston Wahner.

The Demon Freshman wrestling team is off to a great start after last nights multi-meet! The team out wrestled Williams Field 42-9, Liberty 30-9 and Centennial 18-0. Their only loss was a close one to Tempe by a score of 30-33. Outstanding performances by Brandon Woodland, Joseph Simmons, Orlando Rueda, Renso Luviano, Christian Johnson, Evan Huskan and Daniel Craig made for a very memorable night! Congratulate a freshman wrestler when you see one! Go Demons!!!

11/30- CACTUS – AWAY –

Last night the Demon Freshman Wrestlers continue their winning ways sweeping their 3 opponents. The team scores are as follows: Greenway 42, Shadow Ridge 15, Greenway 48, Sierra Linda 12, Greenway 42, Cactus 12. Last night, the freshman wrestled 5 teams and went 5-0 bringing their dual meet record to 13 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie. The match scores were Greenway 18, Ironwood 6, Greenway 36, Glendale 0, Greenway 36, Independence 0, Greenway 36, Washington 0, and Greenway 42, Sunnyslope 0. Outstanding performances by Luviano, Woodland, Dyer, Simmons, Davis and Johnson!
