CROSS COUNTRY (Boys and Girls)

The boys and girls cross country teams had an outstanding run this year! (Pardon the pun.) This years coaches were Scott Giddings, and Alan Walker. The boys cross country team had a great run coming out on the top with a season record of 77-23. The girls cross country team ran with great strength with Senior Kara Zahariades leading the way to victory with a season record of 75-19.

Mr. Giddings, The Arizona Republic announced that Greenway’s Cross Country coach Mr. Giddings will be inducted into the Arizona Runners Hall of Fame 11/04. The ceremony will be held at the Scottsdale Marriot Resort where Greenway’s coach will be honored along with four other inductees.  The dinner kicks off the 41st annual Phoenix 10K and half marathon to benefit the Mollen Foundation. Coach Giddings has been a part of the Arizona running scene since he was a sophomore at Washington High in 1963. Giddings has won many races over the years and he co-founded the Encanto Geese Running Club. In 1998 and 2005 he was named the Cross Country Coach of the year.  Congratulations Coach Giddings.

Boys Cross Country:

On 11/5 the Boy’s Varsity Cross Country team closed out their successful season with a 9th place finish at the State Meet.  Senior Zach Challis-Brown was the #1 Demon followed by the close pack of Manny Ramirez, Rsunn Miller, Brandon Jirak and Nathan Fockler.  Rounding out the scoring included Wade Field and Nathan Grim.

The boys conclude the season with their season with two major Championships and two runner-up titles.  Great season, Boys Cross Country.

8/26 – HALF TIME CROSS COUNTRY MEET – HOME (Moon Valley, Central, Buckeye)

On Friday night at the 34rd annual Shawn Kerr Memorial Halftime Meet, our Boy’s Cross Country team packed six runners in the top ten to beat Moon Valley, Buckeye and Central

The Demons led by Nathan Fockler’s runner-up finish ran stronger the second half of the race to ice the victory.  Nathan Grim (4th), Brandon Jirak (5th) as well as Manny Ramirez, Rsunn Miller and Zach Challis-Brown all claimed Top Ten finishes.  Special thanks to all the Greenway staff, support staff and “cheering” students for their support in this special race.  Greenway is one of the only schools in the state to host such an event.

9/3 – PEAKS INVITATIONAL – AWAY

  • Ricardo Hernandez and Parker Fowler (2ND PLACE) (MEDAL WINNERS)On Saturday our Boy’s and Girl’s Cross Country Teams traveled to “cool” Flagstaff to compete against 20 teams from all over the state in the Peaks Invitational.  The Boy’s Varsity ran very well to capture the runner-up trophy.Nathan Fockler won the Open Division race as a sophomore and came back as a senior to also win the Varsity race.   Medal winner, Rsunn Miller, improved his time by over 2 minutes to finished 11th along with Nathan Grim, Brandon Jirak and Manny Ramirez rounding out the five scoring places.  Senior Wade Field led all Demon finishers in the Open Division race while the Freshman boys placed 2nd led by medal winner, Parker Fowler and Ricardo Hernandez.

9/7 – APOLLO (LIBERTY) – AWAY

Yesterday our Boy’s Junior Varisty Cross Country Team defeated both Apollo and Liberty in a meet at Paseo Park.  Sophomore Brennen Lubker led all Demons followed closely by junior Sam Reno.  Rounding out the top five Demons were freshman Parker Fowler, Trevor Kopis and Ricardo Hernandez.

9/17 – MOUNT CARMEL INVITATIONAL – AWAY

On Saturday our Boys Varsity Cross Country team competed in San Diego’s “prestigious” Mt. Carmel Invitational that included over 98 teams and almost 2000 runners from Southern California and Arizona. Our Greenway’s boys were the 3rd best Arizona school while our senior’s placed a very respectable 4th in their division.

Running “medal winning” races included Nathan Fockler, Manny Ramirez, Brandon Jirak, Nathan Grim, Rsunn Miller, Collin Mason and Parker Fowler.

 

9/21 – GREENWAY (INDEPENDENCE/SUNNYSLOPE) – HOME

Our Boys Varsity Cross Country team placed five runners in the top ten to defeat Sunnyslope but dropped a narrow three point decision to Independence.  Nathan Fockler put on the “jets” the last 200 meters to capture first place while Manny Ramirez, Brandon Jirak and “run one for the team” Nathan Grim rounded out the top four Greenway scorers.  The wave of Zach Challis Brown, Collin Mason, Rsunn Miller and Wade Field closed out the Demons scorers.

Frosh Parker Fowler, Sam Reno and Brennen Lubker paved the way for the Junior Varsity’s victories over both Independence and Sunnyslope.  Rounding out the top six scoring included Fernando Anaya, Hidar Abugalal and Trevor Kopis.  Score:  Greenway 18, Independence 40 and Sunnyslope 76.

9/28 – COPPER CANYON (INDEPENDENCE) – AWAY

Yesterday our JV Boys Cross Country team ran their record to 4 and 0 by defeating Independence 19 to 41. Soph Brennen Lubker paced the young Demons for the top JV finisher followed by the pack of Parker Fowler, Fernando Anaya, Hidar Abugalal and Trevor Kopis. Freshman Zach Butler and Fernando Hernandez rounded out the Demon scoring. Good Job…..JV.

9/30 – NIKE® DESERT TWILIGHT – AWAY

Last Friday night, our Boy’s Varsity Cross Country team traveled to Casa Grande to compete under the lights in the Desert Twilight Meet involving over 2500 runners and over 220 teams.

The boys placed an outstanding 2nd out of 53 teams in the small school varsity division. Medal winners Nathan Grim and Brandon Jirak paced the Demons along with some season best performances from Zach Challis-Brown, Rsunn Miller, Wade Field and Collin Mason.

Senior Nathan Fockler ran very well in the Sweepstakes Division and recorded the “third fastest time” of all Division III runners in all races.

Excellent night…Cross Country.

10/5 – APOLLO (THUNDERBIRD) – AWAY

Yesterday our Boy’s Varsity Cross Country team defeated both Apollo and Thunderbird.   The Demons, led by Manny Ramirez, packed five runners in the top ten to ice the victory.  Seniors Brandon Jirak, Nathan Grim, Zach Challis-Brown and Wade Field proved the deciding factors in the win.

The Junior Varsity, taking the top five places, swept Thunderbird with a perfect 15 to 50 score.  Frosh Parker Fowler improved his time by over two minutes to lead the Demon wave of Hidar Abugalal, Trevor Kopis, Fernando Anaya, and Zach Butler.

8/26 – HALF TIME CROSS COUNTRY MEET – HOME (Moon Valley, Central, Buckeye)

The Greenway Lady Demons cross country team got off to a fast start at the 34th annual Shawn Kerr Memorial Halftime meet. From the gun, the lady demons took control of the race and never looked back. Winning her first halftime meet and recording the 4th fastest time ever on the course was senior Kara Zahariades. Chasing close behind in the next three spots were Maile Moosman, Rylee Adams and Nicole Sanford.
Helping to soldify the victory were Ashlie Rivera, Andrea Suciu, Guadalupe Pina and Valerie Lopez. Next up, the Lady Demons head to Flagstaff for the Peaks Invitational.

Our Girl’s Varsity also captured the runner-up trophy led by an outstanding 4th place finish from team leader, Kara Zahariades.  The girls used their superior depth led by Nicole Sanford, Maile Moosman, Rylee Adams and Lalli Hernandez to outdistance Boulder Creek by one point.

Freshman Andrea Sucoo took 1st place honors in the Novice Race as medal winners Ashlie Rivera (3rd ), Hannah Nesbitt (8th) and almost medal winner, Valerie Lopez (11th) help the younger girls WIN the Novice Division.

9/17 – MOUNT CARMEL INVITATIONAL – AWAY

Our Lady Demons traveled to San Diego for the Mt. Carmel Invitational, one of the biggest invitationals in CA with over 100 schools competing.

The Lady Demons made their presence known by taking home 9 medals, the most over by a Lady Demons Squad.

Freshmen Andrea Suciu lead off with a 14th place finish and Valerie Lopez earning a medal. Both sophomores Ashlie Rivera and Hannah Nesbitt moved up in their races to earn some hardware. Junior Maile Moosman finished in 14th and Rylee Adams took home 21st to continue the Demons medal count. Guadalupe Pina and Mahria Padilla ran solid races in the Junior division.

The highlight went to the senior division with Kara Zahariades, Nicole Sanford and Lalli Hernandez taking fifth, sixteenth and eighteenth respectively. A very dominant performance by the senior trio.

DESERT SOLSTICE INVITATIONAL – AWAY

“The Lady Demons Cross Country team competed in the Desert Solstice Invitational this past weekend that brings together the best teams in the state of Arizona for all divisions. The Lady Demons placed a very respectable 8th and finished runner up to the current division leader.

Senior Kara Zahariades ran her best cross country race of career to earn a medal and run sub 20 minutes. Helping the Demons in their superb team effort were Nicole Sanford, Maile Moosman, Rylee Adams, Andrea Suciu, Lalli Hernandez, Valerie Lopez and Guadalupe Pina.

Earning a medal in the younger division was sophomore Ashlie Rivera. Sophomore Hannah Nesbitt ran a PR race.

The Lady Demons Cross Country squad accepted the task of continuing the tradition of success that the previous ladies have brought to the program.
In the Wendell Sheets Open, Freshman Valerie Lopez took the lead early and never looked back! Winning the race and becoming the third consecutive winner for the Lady Demons. Her teammates Ashlie Rivera and Hannah Nesbitt took the next two spots. Earning medals for solid races were Mahria Padilla, Vanessa Lopez, Mona Abu-Galal and Eva Cervantez.
The district jamboree championship is determined by the best fifth runner. The Lady Demons had all 5 runners in the top 6 places right from the gun. Senior Kara Zahariades was patient then unleashed a long kick from a mile out to become the first ever three time jamboree champion and new course record holder. Seniors Nicole Sanford and Lalli Hernandez took the silver and bronze. Junior Maile Moosman and Freshman stud Andrea Suciu took fifth and sixth. Rylee Adams and Guadalupe Pina ran quality races to help the Demons secure a NEW Jamboree Record for lowest team score!
